We’ve been so excited about this month’s word. We are really passionate about fitness, and, like so many of the other concepts we teach here at Kuk Sool Won™ of St. Paul, we teach it as a complex, multi-faceted, whole-life skill. Getting better at fitness is not something you only do for an hour a day while you’re working out, or in the kitchen cooking up a mess of kale. You can (and should) be working on fitness at work, during your commute, in your leisure time, with your partner, with your children, with your parents, even with your co-workers. Fitness is a daily journey, a project that starts at birth and lasts a lifetime.
We define fitness as “striving to be in the best possible shape physically, mentally, and emotionally.” Here are some of the facets of fitness we’ll be discussing in our classes.
Physical fitness: exercise, diet, breathing, people-powered transportation, sunshine, healthy environments.
Mental fitness: learning, the World Kuk Sool Association syllabus, interpersonal relationships, change.
Emotional fitness: identifying feelings, self-control, breathing, emotional support.
We’re also sponsoring an all-school (and beyond) Health and Fitness Initiative. We’re challenging our students to meet 5 basic fitness challenges every day:
1. Get enough sleep. We’re recommending that adults get 8.5 hours or more, youth get 9.5 hours or more, and children get at least 10 hours nightly.
2. Start each day with a glass of water.
3. Eat at least 3 whole-food plants daily.
4. Exercise with an elevated heart rate or walk/bicycle as part of your transportation needs at least 60 minutes a day.
5. Practice “just breathing” at least 10 minutes a day.
If you’re interested in joining us in this initiative, please feel free to email us. We’ll add you to a list that sends you a daily reminder email, plus extra tips and information to inspire and support you on your path to greater fitness. We’re also giving folks the chance to support each other in smaller, more-focused groups dedicated to learning or improving in areas like meditation, diet, overall lifestyle changes, exercise, and weight loss. We want to support your healthy journey to greater fitness — please let us know how we can help!
